ABOUT ME
Welcome to Sew Historical Costumes! My name is Abby and I am a professional costumer and seamstress currently working from home while I raise my kid. I am a shameless fashion and history nerd with a special place in my heart for Medieval, Renaissance, Men's Regency, and Edwardian clothing. Truly, it is hard for me to even choose those in particular, though, because I love all historical and international costume! I love to express my creative impulses through sewing, drawing, painting, and crafts of every kind...from the first Barbie clothes I hand-stitched at the early age of 9, to the shop table I built with my husband last weekend.
I began my theatrical training at East Texas Baptist University and finished my education with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatrical Design at Baylor University. Over the years, I have worked as a Scenic Carpenter, Scenic Painter, Stage Electrician, Costume Coordinator, Costume Designer, Seamstress, Stage Manager, and even a High School Drama Teacher.
My costumes are beyond retro and vintage...I create fantasy and period reproduction garments using modern techniques. From Pre-history to the 20th century, I have done and continue to do research to achieve a correct historical look for all of my fashions. I use period-appropriate fabrics when I can and everything is fully lined where it counts. All of my costumes are built in the "Broadway Style" with multiple layers for durability to ensure you can enjoy a quality garment for years to come!
I have over 16 years of costuming and stagecraft experience and I love to use my skills to create beautiful and durable costumes. I am consistently working to develop my own patterns that work with my theatrical training in costume design and construction techniques.
I make customized costumes for individuals for Medieval and Renaissance Faires, SCA events, weddings, LARP, period re-enactments, fancy dress, and just for fun!
I love history and I love clothing and I would love to share that with you...Thanks for visiting!
